Delegations from over one hundred countries to participate in the 1st TAFISA World Martial Arts Festival in the Ulyanovsk region
The international event will take place in the region from 13 to 17 September, 2019.
“More than one hundred countries have already expressed their intention to come to our region and to demonstrate their national martial arts. During the festival, Russia will present sambo, the art of self-defense. It is a traditional Russian sport, which brings together elements of national wrestling such as buza, koresh and others. Today it is one of the most effective and beautiful types of martial arts. The Ulyanovsk region has a well-developed school of sambo; we have more than ten world champions in this kind of sport. We are actively developing sambo infrastructure. Just a few days ago, a regional Center of Sports and Combat Sambo will be opened in Dimitrovgrad. This facility will become the main educational and training venue for athletes. We have also joined the federal project "Sambo in School" ("Sambo v Shkolu"). We will create and equip special rooms for training of school children”, - explained Alexander Smekalin, Prime Minister of the Ulyanovsk region.
Presentation of the TAFISA festival has taken place within the International Forum "Russia – Country of Sports" and was attended by Dr. Ju-Ho Chang, President of the Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA).
“Martial arts are one of the most popular sports in the world. Russia is the leader in their promotion. We have made the decision that Ulyanovsk region must become one of the centers for development of this sport. I am sure that Ulyanovsk will successfully host the first TAFISA World Festival in 2019 because even now we can see that the region is actively preparing to this high-level event. We are sure that everything will go according to the best traditions of martial arts”, – Mr. Ju-Ho Chang noted.
Agreement on holding of the event was reached in July 2017. The document was signed by the Governor of the Ulyanovsk region Sergey Morozov and Dr. Ju-Ho Chang, President of the Association for International Sport for All. The meeting with the management of TAFISA association took place in Kazan during the VI International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VI). The Ulyanovsk region got the right to host the world games after the drawing of lots and a visit of the expert international commission.
“Today the Ulyanovsk region takes a leading place in development of martial arts in Russia. We can see that great support provided by the Ulyanovsk region's government. Children from the Ulyanovsk region show decent performance during World cups and championships. I am happy to see that the region is proud of its athletes; one can see photos of champions on city banners. In addition, we will adopt experience of the Ulyanovsk region and will develop a single map of cultural establishments for athletes. There is a good reason why the TAFISA games will take place here. The region already has a good tradition to hold major international sporting events. We are sure that this festival will become a good base for further development of martial arts both in Russia and around the world”, – noted Ramil Gabbasov, Executive Director of the Russian Union of Martial Arts.
Exhibition performances of regional federations of sambo, mas-wrestling, koresh, taekwondo, kickboxing, boxing, kyokushin, aikido, and ju-jitsu, have taken place within the presentation of the 1st TAFISA World Martial Arts Festival.
