Sergey Morozov presented economic capacity of the Ulyanovsk region in Japan

The governor made a speech at the XV Joint Meeting of the Japanese-Russian and Russian-Japanese Committees on Economic Cooperation and held meetings with heads of state.


Chairmen Alexander Shokhin (Russian-Japanese Committee on Economic Cooperation) and Teruo Asada (Japanese-Russian Committee on Economic Cooperation) became moderators of the meeting. The event was organized by Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP).

The head of the region Sergey Morozov made a speech at the session "Russian regions: promising areas of cooperation", which focused on collaboration in development of infrastructure facilities, urban environment, and engineering services. Other topics included interaction in the field of port economy, transport, automotive industry, electrical engineering, and the chemicals sector.

“We have defined the key spheres of our partnership with Japanese companies and corporations. These are wind power engineering, smart and green technologies, infrastructure, automotive and aircraft industries (including production of unmanned aerial vehicles), healthcare and rehabilitation technologies, as well as smart machine-tool building. There is a great base for development of high-tech industries in the Ulyanovsk region. The share of knowledge-intensive and high-tech industries in the region's gross regional product makes 34%. The Ulyanovsk region is among the top three Russian territories on this indicator. Thanks to the emphasis on smart production, gross regional product has increased by more than 40% over the last five years. Investment projects are equivalent to about 30 percent of the gross regional product; that is why we pay great attention to needs of foreign investors. And our relations with Japanese partners is of paramount importance”, – Sergey Morozov said.

Cooperation experience of the Ulyanovsk region and the Land of the Rising Sun was used as an example for other participants at the event. They noted that the region is successfully working with investors from Japan and is an attractive platform for business development.

The Governor Sergey Morozov held a number of meetings with the Government of Japan. He held negotiations with Yoshihide Suga, Chief Cabinet Secretary, and Eiichi Hasegawa, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan. Masaji Matsuyama, Senator of the upper house of the National Diet of Japan, attended the event.

The Governor explained that the Ulyanovsk region has already implemented a number of successful projects together with representatives of Japanese business. He suggested developing cooperation between Japan and the Ulyanovsk region. Sergey Morozov also talked about the International Forum "Japanese Spring on the Volga". It will become an important platform to discuss cooperation between two countries.

Today more than ten Japanese companies have placed their productions in our region. Major projects are implemented by such companies as ISUZU, TAKATA, DMG Mori Seiki, and Bridgestone. In the first half of 2018, the trade turnover between the Ulyanovsk region and Japan made about one hundred million US dollars. Japan takes the first place on the volume of import to the Ulyanovsk region.
