Ulyanovsk Region Has Launched Innovative Project "Smart Farm"

Within the Governor's Council on Agro-Industrial Complex and Rural Development, which took place on January 14, Sergey Morozov visited the site located at P.A. Stolypin Ulyanovsk State Agrarian University (UlSAU) in Cherdaklinsky District.

The head of the region reminded that the agrarian university is one of the main educational facilities of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and is among the leaders on patents. Sergey Morozov noted, “It is important for us to ensure that UlSAU keeps its position as the center of agrarian education and science. I am pleased with this university's innovative approach to education; practical training in the field of cattle keeping have reached a new level.”

In October 2019, Smart Farm was introduced as a training complex for cattle keeping and milking at the Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology Department. It can fit ten heads of dairy herd and will become the basis for training of veterinary doctors, veterinary and sanitary experts and livestock specialists. This complex includes a specialized classroom and feeding pens for cows, and the most effective milking facility "Yolochka", as well as devices for milking management and cattle drinking bowls.

“We are developing an educational, scientific and methodological base for the training of highly qualified specialists - this is the most important thing for us and the region. We are introducing innovative technologies. Let us take the Smart Farm project, for example. It offers ready-made innovative solutions for cow husbandry and provides digital assistance with the physiological condition of animals. Such a cattle identification programme is essential for automatic recording and processing of parameters. The CowScout system records movements of the animal and sends the data of the measured activity to the processor. This helps to detect limp, as well as difficulties after calving, eating food and others. Thanks to this, students can see all information about animals' condition not only inside the university, but also on their smartphones or tablets. Even first year students will be able to study necessary skills and learn about farming process from A to Z,” - said Vitaly Isaichev, Rector of P.A. Stolypin Ulyanovsk State Agrarian University.

Milk produced by cows at Smart Farm meet all requirements of the relevant standard. That is why it was decided to process milk in the university laboratory. Smart Farm has also started production of five diary goods - milk, kefir, sour cream, curd and butter.

According to Mikhail Semyonkin, Deputy Chairman of the Government - Minister of Agro-Industrial Complex and Rural Development of the Ulyanovsk Region, UlSAU also continues equipping facilities for fish farming. Four years ago, the university started with two small pools; now it has recirculating aquaculture systems, an incubation facility, and an ultrasound unit. The university breeds African sharptooth catfish, sturgeon, bellows, and sterlet. Scientists of UlSAU are actively involved in research activities and receive significant grant support.

Within the event, P.A. Stolypin Ulyanovsk State Agrarian University and ANO "Center for Strategic Studies of the Ulyanovsk Region" signed an agreement on cooperation in training of highly qualified specialists and scientific personnel. Another document focused on cooperation between UlSAU and ZAO "Prominvest" to create a branch of the Animal Feeding and Breeding Department at ZAO "Prominvest" in Novospass District.
