First UV Waste Water Disinfection System to Be Built at Sewage Treatment Facilities of Ulyanovsk Region

The equipment will be installed within the federal project "Volga restoration" of the national project "Ecology", which was developed at the initiative of President Vladimir Putin.

According to Alexander Cherepan, Minister of Energy, Public Utilities and Urban Environment of the Ulyanovsk Region, the technology of ultraviolet disinfection for sewage treatment facilities will help to purify waste water without chlorine, which will also have a positive impact on the Volga River ecosystem. These UV disinfection stations will be installed at the new treatment facilities in Novoulyanovsk and sewage treatment facilities on the left bank of Ulyanovsk in 2020. According to preliminary estimates, just the UV disinfection station on the left bank will allow to treat 36500 thousand cubic meters of wastewater per year. Next year it is planned to start construction of a similar facility on the right bank of the regional center.

Total funding of the Volga Restoration federal project, which will be carried out in the Ulyanovsk region until 2024, will amount to more than 5 billion rubles. A list of sewage treatment facilities in need of reconstruction has been formed based on the results of inventory accounting from 2019. The document includes six treatment facilities located in Ulyanovsk, Novoulyanovsk, Dimitrovgrad, Barish and Inza. Their total capacity makes 393.5 thousand m3/day or 143 742.5 thousand m3/year. The national project aims to reduce the volume of contaminated waste water by three times by 2024. This indicator in the Ulyanovsk region will go down from 94,522.8 thousand cubic meters to 31,507.6 thousand cubic meters.

We would like to remind that the thematic week of the Ecology national project is held in Ulyanovsk region from 23 to 27 March by order of Governor Sergey Morozov.
