Ulyanovsk Region Meets Targets of Ecology National Project

The region discussed results of the thematic week, which took place from 23 to 29 March by order of Governor Sergey Morozov.

“Within implementation of the Ecology national project, the Ulyanovsk region is cleaning river beds, providing new wildfire suppression equipment, reducing waste disposal, and reconstructing treatment facilities. Volunteers and ecologists carry out educational events. Due to the current epidemic situation, we had to adjust our plans for the thematic week slightly. All major events took place via videoconference or with a minimum number of participants. Meanwhile, these days we have checked and gone through plans and schedules for implementation of the national project. During the meeting between Governor Sergey Morozov and representatives of the environmental community, we discussed the new Environmental Code of the Ulyanovsk region. Several thematic events also took place in the region,” - said Gulnara Rakhmatulina, Acting Minister of Nature and Circular Economy of Ulyanovsk Region.

The Ulyanovsk region participates in such projects as "Integrated system for municipal waste management", "Preservation of unique water objects", "Conservation of biological diversity", "Forests preservation", "Clean water" and "Improvement of the Volga River".  Thanks to the Ecology national project, which was developed at the initiative of President Vladimir Putin, the Ulyanovsk region will improve its environmental situation.

According to experts of the relevant agency, the inspection of treatment facilities took place in the city of Novoulyanovsk during the thematic week. They are reconstructed within the federal project "Improvement of the Volga River". The work is carried out according to the approved schedule and is to be completed by 1 October, 2020. Ecologists also inspected the Uren River near the village of Ust-Uren, Karsunsky District, where the river bed was cleaned in 2019 under the project "Preservation of unique water objects". Specialists organized an inspection of the Yulovka and Syuksyum rivers in Inzensky District, which are also scheduled for cleaning. The necessary documentation is currently being prepared.

New wildfire suppression equipment was purchased thanks to the Ulyanovsk region's participation in the project "Forests preservation". Its potential was also presented as part of the thematic week. The specialized equipment includes a bulldozer, a fire-fighting tank truck, a small forest patrol complex, and a low-boy trailer. They were used to equip a wildfire suppression station in the Inzensky forest area. In total, seventeen units of special equipment were purchased in 2019; it is planned to buy seven more this year.

Ulyanovsk State University has opened an environmental project fair, during which the campaign "Domales" has been launched. It focuses on preservation of forest areas and urges people not to real trees for the New Year holidays. Volunteers of the Ecoarmia movement distributed conifer seeds among the population and explained how to plant and care for them so that people could grow their own trees at home in the future. A round table discussion was held via videoconference regarding separate waste collection.

A meeting was held via videoconference on 26 March with the participation of municipalities that were planning to build or reconstruct water supply and treatment facilities within the federal projects "Clean water" and "Improvement of the Volga River". Such meetings are held weekly to ensure constant monitoring of projects' implementation and documentation.

The thematic week of the Ecology national project was concluded with the international environmental event called Earth Hour. Administrative buildings turned off outdoor lighting between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. on 28 March. They included the Government of Ulyanovsk Region, Ulyanovsk city administration, the House of Soviets, as well as Ulyanovsk Urban Electric Network and the philharmonic hall. In addition, residents of the Ulyanovsk region also participated in the event; they voluntarily turned off electricity and their mobile phones for one hour.
