Ulyanovsk Region to Treat Wastewater with New Chlorine-Free Technology in 2020

This will become possible thanks to implementation of the federal project "Improvement of the Volga River" within the national project "Ecology" initiated by President Vladimir Putin.

On 2 June, Governor Sergey Morozov examined construction of an ultraviolet disinfection station at the treatment facilities on the left bank of Ulyanovsk and held a thematic meeting regarding implementation of the national project "Ecology". He said, “We have approved a recovery plan for the regional economy. It has a separate paragraph on environmental issues. In this regard, I would like to highlight one feature of our meeting today - the 10th Volga Ecological Week was launched in the region on 1 June; this is a unique platform that provides experts with an opportunity for dialogue. Today we can see that the region is actively working on the national project "Ecology". Within its framework, we are implementing such federal programmes as "Improvement of the Volga River" and "Clean Water". The total funding for these projects will amount to more than 5 billion rubles by 2024, and their results will be of great importance for thousands of residents in our region. That is why we must adhere strictly to the work schedules, monitor their quality and use the latest technologies.”

In total, about five billion rubles will be provided for implementation of the federal project "Improvement of the Volga River" within the national project "Ecology" by 2024. This money will be used to reconstruct sewage treatment facilities on the right and left banks of Ulyanovsk, Novoulyanovsk, Dimitrovgrad, Barysh and Inza. According to results of the federal project, the volume of raw wastewater should decrease by a factor of three in the Ulyanovsk region by the end of 2024: from 94522.8 thousand m³ to 31507.6 thousand m³.

Alexander Cherepan, Minister of Energy, Public Utilities and Urban Environment of Ulyanovsk Region, reported to the head of the region that it is expected to get the first results after commissioning of two facilities in 2021 - ultraviolet disinfection stations at sewage treatment plants on the left bank of Ulyanovsk and Novoulyanovsk. Currently, construction within the national project "Ecology" has just started in the regional center; work in Novoulyanovsk is already underway.

Both facilities are to be commissioned in 2020. For the first time in the region, the upgraded treatment plants will use modern technology of chlorine-free ultraviolet disinfection. According to Sergey Savelyev, Director of UMUP "Ulyanovskvodokanal", ultraviolet disinfection of water is now one of the most environmentally friendly and safest purification methods. Introduction of this technology will minimize the impact of wastewater on the Volga River.
