First Container Train Comes to Ulyanovsk Region from China as Part of One Belt One Road Project
On 29 June, a direct train with cargo left Zibo, a city in central Shandong Province, China, for Ulyanovsk as part of the project to create a logistics route for Chinese goods.
Yu Haitian (Mayor of Zibo) and Li Kai (Secretary of the Zibo Party Committee, head of the Special Economic Zone "Zibo") took part in the official ceremony. Governor Sergey Morozov sent a video greeting to foreign partners.
The head of the region said, “Zibo and the Ulyanovsk region are actively developing cooperation. Establishing a channel for two-way international trade is the main focus of our joint activities. This will be a logistics route for Chinese goods within the One Belt One Road Project, which will be delivered from China to Russia and Europe and vice versa. During the global coronavirus pandemic, electronic commerce is becoming an important driver of economic growth for almost all sectors of the economy both in the Russian Federation and in the People's Republic of China. The Ulyanovsk region's favorable geographical location allows us to create a free-trade zone with this country.”
According to Sergey Vasin, Director General of Ulyanovsk Region Development Corporation, the first train to Russia included 50 containers with automotive components, construction materials, oil and gas equipment and sports goods.
The train is expected to come to Ulyanovsk on 15-18 July.
“We held a series of negotiations with the management of a logistics park in SEZ "Zibo", representatives of the Russian Railways and PJSC "TransContainer" regarding the launch of the train, the tariff policy and deconsolidation of shipments; we also agreed on the route through Russia - the train will go from Zabaikalsk station to Ulyanovsk-3 one,” - said Oleg Barabanov, head of SEZ "Ulyanovsk".
After the train's arrival at the Ulyanovsk-3 station, it is planned to distribute items to local customers and to other cities of the Volga Federal District, which includes Cheboksary and Nizhny Novgorod.
In the future, a monthly dispatch of four container trains will be organized along the Zibo-Ulyanovsk-Zibo route. The parties also discussed establishment of a consolidation center for Russian goods in the Ulyanovsk region so that manufacturers from the Volga Federal District could send their products to Chinese customers in the future.
In April 2019, SEZ "Ulyanovsk" and SEZ "Zibo" signed a Memorandum on Cooperation to implement a direct container train project. The partnership with Chinese special economic zone will be carried out within the intergovernmental project "One Belt One Road".
In the future, it is planned to build a logistics warehouse and a container terminal with a railway line able to accommodate trains in SEZ "Ulyanovsk".
