Ulyanovsk Plant Makes Its Hundredth Set of Wind Turbine Blades

On 25 September, Governor Sergey Morozov took part in the ceremony at the Vestas Manufacturing Rus plant. Innovative equipment will be sent to the wind farm in the Astrakhan region.

The head of the region said, “Congratulations to the staff of the Vestas plant on the release of its hundredth set of wind turbine blades made in the Ulyanovsk region. I would like to thank everyone who contributed in this event. These products are a part of the cutting-edge energy complex. Together with RUSNANO, Vestas helps our region stay among the leaders in the Russian renewable energy sector. Development of this sphere is an excellent opportunity to join processing chains of international companies at global markets.”

The enterprise, which was the first in Russia to master production of innovative goods, has shipped 300 composite blades to Russian and foreign wind parks since the beginning of 2019. Using these components, 100 wind turbines with the total capacity of about 400 MW were built. Low-carbon generation of such volume allows to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 380 thousand tons per year compared to ones from traditional methods. Clean electricity produced with the use of Ulyanovsk blades at wind farms will satisfy needs of 340 thousand average households.

According to the plant's management, thanks to support of the regional Government and unique security measures, production of blades did not stop even in the spring of 2020, which was the pandemic's most difficult period.

The plant annually increases its output - production of blades has increased by 40% in 2020. Goods made in Ulyanovsk are used at the wind parks of the Wind Energy Development Fund, which was established by Fortum PJSC and RUSNANO JSC in the Rostov region and the Republic of Kalmykia as part of the Vestas integrated windmill. Plans for 2021 include shipments to the Fund's sites in the Astrakhan and Rostov regions.

“Together with RUSNANO and local industry partners, Vestas is successfully developing its production facilities in Ulyanovsk. The quality of Russian goods was confirmed by the first export delivery to Denmark this year and a long-term order portfolio with the total capacity of more than 1800 MW under an agreement with the Wind Energy Development Fund for the Russian market of renewable energy sources. We are confident that our blades will be able to meet the strict requirements for equipment localization as part of the second support programme in Russia. At the next stage, in addition to glass fabrics, we will start using pultruded profile, resins and other Russian-made components,” - said Kimal Yusupov, Director General of Vestas Manufacturing Rus.

The Vestas Manufacturing Rus plant, which was commissioned in December 2018, produces composite blades for turbines of wind-driven generators that have no analogues in the Russian Federation. The production site is located in the aviation cluster in Ulyanovsk. The blades are designed for plants with a capacity of 3.4 - 4.2 MW. Vestas, RUSNANO and Consortium of Investors of the Ulyanovsk Region, which includes Ulyanovsk Nanocenter "Ulnanotech" and the Ulyanovsk Region Development Corporation, act as partners of the project. The high-tech plant created more than 500 new jobs.

“Enterprises such as Vestas are very important for us - this is an innovative plant that develops new expertise for the region and, most importantly, creates jobs for our residents. The company works across two different industries: wind-power engineering and composite materials. Our task now is to find partners for this company, those who will cooperate with it in production of binding substances and composite raw materials. These companies will be able to supply materials to the automotive and aviation industries, which will develop new trends in the region,” - said Sergey Vasin, Director General of Ulyanovsk Region Development Corporation.

As a reference:

Vestas (Denmark), a world leader in wind power generation, is transferring wind energy technologies and increasing its production capacities in Russia together with RUSNANO. Its blade production in Ulyanovsk has become one of the key stages of wind power equipment localization programme in Russia (18% contribution to the degree of wind turbine component localization). Vestas was selected as a wind turbine equipment supplier for the Wind Energy Development Fund, which implements construction projects for wind farms with the total capacity of at least 1,800 MW until 2023.
