Ulyanovsk Athletes Win Six Awards at Women's Russian Boxing Championship

From 24 October to 1 November, the Ulyanovsk region hosted the All-Russian competition, which also served as a preliminary round for the Olympic Games in Tokyo – 2021.

 

Governor Sergey Morozov praised organization of the event at a meeting of the operational headquarters on 2 November.

He said, “The past week gave us many opportunities, and some of them opened thanks to the excellent conduct of Women's Russian Boxing Championship. I cordially congratulate Ulyanovsk athletes on their victories and I wish them great achievements in the future. I want to express gratitude to the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation and the Boxing Federation of Russia for the trust they placed in the Ulyanovsk region! The championship became a significant event for the region.”

The national team of the Ulyanovsk region, which was coached by Ayrat and Ilya Bogdanov, showed excellent results and took the third place in the team competition. Svetlana Soluyanova (51 kg), Nune Asatryan (60 kg) and Maria Urakova (81 kg) became champions of Russia. Silver medals went to Natalya Sychugova (64 kg) and Evgenia Molochkova (81 kg), while Alena Artemova got a bronze one in the 48-kg weight class. After the final fights, the athletes' performance was analyzed by Ivan Shidlovsky, the head coach of the women's national boxing team. According to him, the Championship of Russia showed that these athletes have really good skills; it also helped to establish key members of the national team.

“The Ulyanovsk region was included in the list of the Boxing Federation of Russia as one of the main venues for sports events involving both women and men. Thanks to the Federation's support, we will start implementing the Boxing to School project ("Boks v shkolu"). The next stage will include construction of the Center for Boxing Progress, a large sports complex with the area of ​at least three thousand square meters which will not only provide training, but also serve as a venue for All-Russian competitions. In addition, we agreed to create the All-Russian Competence Center for Women's Boxing in the region - a training base for Russian athletes,” - said Alexander Smekalin, Head of the Championship Organizing Committee, Chairman of the Government of Ulyanovsk Region.

As part of the Championship and in order to continue developing boxing in the region, a corresponding cooperation agreement was signed between the Ulyanovsk Region and the Boxing Federation of Russia. In addition, a settlement was arranged to launch the Boxing to School educational program in the Ulyanovsk region. It aims to teach elements of boxing techniques as part of physical education in schools. The necessary equipment for schoolchildren will be purchased by the regional Government and the Boxing Federation of Russia.

“I am grateful to the government of the Ulyanovsk region for their attention to development of boxing as a national sport. Boxing teaches us sportsmanship and ethics, respect for universal human values. Together with the Ulyanovsk region's government, we will be able to build the Center for Boxing Progress as soon as possible. I am sure that this facility will bring up more than one generation of famous boxers and just good people who will choose boxing as a sport and lifestyle. The Boxing Federation of Russia will provide this project with all necessary support,” - said Umar Kremlev, Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of Russia.

According to Ramil Egorov, Minister of Physical Education and Sport of the Ulyanovsk Region, organization of the Championship was highly praised by both federal colleagues and residents of the region. He commented, “The world sports stars, including Olympic champions, who came to the region and held master classes for students of sports schools, will certainly help us to promote sport and active lifestyle among young people, as well as to complete the main task of the federal project "Sport as a norm of life".”
