Ulyanovsk Region: Mars Microbiology Laboratory Opens to Monitor Quality of Products
On 14 December, Governor Sergey Morozov took part in the official opening ceremony. The event was held online.
The laboratory is located in the immediate vicinity of MARS chocolate factory in the village of Cherdakly. It will research if goods comply with state, regulatory and corporate requirements.
“Mars is a reliable partner of the Ulyanovsk region; we have been working together for more than ten years. During this time, the company implemented in the region a number of investment projects: it built two factories, a packaging workshop and a center for pet nutrition research, as well as created more than 600 new jobs for residents of the region. The company uses a green policy and is a vivid example of responsible attitude to the environment and introduction of the latest technologies. All its enterprises have a waste sorting system. This allows to process and recycle the maximum amount of waste. Mars has had a rational approach to consumption of electricity, gas and water resources for years. And at the beginning of 2020, modern treatment facilities were commissioned at the factory for production of pet food,” - the head of the region said.
Construction of the laboratory started in June 2018 and took about two years. The site was selected based on the long history of investment cooperation between the Ulyanovsk region and Mars, as well as extensive microbiological research for chocolate production. Today, there are six permanent employees, but the investor is going to gradually increase this number.
The laboratory was opened due to the need to use modern accelerated research methods and to reduce the time required for production and shipment goods.
“Ulyanovsk region is a strategically important place for Mars. We have two factories here - one for production of confectionery and the other one for pet food. There is also a center for pet nutrition research. We highly appreciate the support provided by the Governor and the Government of the region at all stages of our cooperation. Three hundred and seventy-five million rubles were invested in construction of the new microbiological laboratory, and the total investment in the projects of Mars LLC in the Ulyanovsk region exceeded 11 billion rubles,” - said Maher Batrouny, President of Mars LLC and Director General at Mars Wrigley Russia.
According to Sergey Vasin, Director General of Ulyanovsk Region Development Corporation, Mars LLC annually sends more than one billion rubles of tax payments to the budgets.
Currently, laboratory employees in Cherdakly have already taken part in seven rounds of LCG and FAPAS comparative tests (with the success rate of 100% in critical tests and 95% in sanitary ones). The laboratory also received a prestigious Gold LEED certificate for achievements in the field of sustainable construction. In particular, a lot of attention was paid to energy efficiency of the facility - it has light sensors and automatic mixer faucets on sinks. The building also uses geothermal energy as the heat source.
