Ulyanovsk Region Starts the Year of Collegiate Sports
The event, which took place on 25 January, was attended by Governor Aleksey Russkikh.
He said, “Last year was dedicated to children's sports - and it was quite successful, despite the COVID-related restrictions. The region organized a school sport festival of the CIS countries; nineteen sport facilities were established and upgraded. On the Students' Day, we officially started the Year of Collegiate Sports, which will bring bright and significant events for the youth. We will also continue upgrading equipment in educational institutions of the region. Now, one of the important tasks for us is to create conditions for all residents of the Ulyanovsk region who want to lead an active lifestyle, regardless of their age and physical state.”
The opening ceremony for the thematic year was attended by Russian footballer Dmitry Sychev. He became the first ambassador of the Year of Collegiate Sports in the Ulyanovsk region. The sportsman met with students of the Volga Olympic Reserve School and held a master class for them.
“I spent my college years playing football non-stop, so it will be very interesting to look at this sphere from a different angle. I strive to participate in events as much as possible, because this is a very important task. We can use my example to show the younger generation that sport is a lifestyle, the key to a healthy nation,” said Dmitry Sychev.
During the year, the region will be visited by famous athletes who act as ambassadors of the Year of Collegiate Sports. They include Elena Isinbaeva (two-time Olympic champion), Dmitry Pirog (world boxing champion), Irina Sumnikova (Olympic champion in Basketball) and Maxim Khramtsov (Olympic champion in Taekwondo). Famous sports commentator Georgy Cherdantsev is also planning to come to the region. Ambassadors will hold master classes for students, as well as take part in sports events, forums, and round table discussions.
Ramil Egorov, Minister of Physical Education and Sports of Ulyanovsk Region, said that the VIII All-Russian Summer Universiade would be the main event of the thematic year in the region. Finals of the competitions will be held in Ulyanovsk and will focus on six sports: boxing, taekwondo, orienteering, chess, badminton, and Greco-Roman wrestling.
